They say dogs are a man’s best friend, but as it turns out they’re a baby’s best friend too. Duke, a Connecticut shelter dog adopted six years ago by the Brousseau family, is being hailed as a hero after saving the life of the family’s nine-week-old daughter, Harper.

On October 7th, Duke alerted Harper’s parents to trouble by jumping on their bed and shaking uncontrollably.

“He’s insanely obedient so this was extremely bizarre,” Jenna Brousseau told WFSB-TV.

Duke’s behavior prompted Jenna’s husband to go check on little Harper, who discovered that the baby had stopped breathing.

“My husband called 911 and the ambulance came here and it was because of our Dukie dog, who alerted us,” said Jenna.

“If Duke hadn’t, you know, been so scared, then we would have just gone to sleep.”

Doctors believe acid reflux may have caused Harper to stop breathing, but she is doing fine now.  And the Brousseaus couldn’t be happier they decided to save Duke all those years ago.

“He’s the perfect dog,” said Jenna. “He was meant to be ours, and meant to be hers.”
