Prof – Facebook Post

A full-time professor at St. Lawrence College is meeting with college officials this week over homophobic comments on his Facebook page.

Business professor Rick Coupland posted a comment about a story on a pride flag being raised for a festival in the U.S. saying…”It’s the queers they should be hanging – not the flag”.

Coupland’s Facebook profile has since been deleted.

St. Lawrence it is investigating and Coupland says he is meeting with officials today and tomorrow.

Sex Offender – Kingston

Another sex offender is calling Kingston home.

56 year old Alexander Casselman has been released from prison after serving the full length of a 20 year sentence for rape.

He appeared in court on Friday and agreed to a peace bond that had been requested.

It requires him to meet a variety of conditions.

Casselman will be leaving in a residence on Montreal Street.

Napanee Fatal

Napanee OPP is asking for witnesses to come forward after a fatal single vehicle crash in Napanee on Friday afternoon.

A vehicle went off the road and struck a rock cut near the intersection of County Road 2 and Palace Road claiming the life of an elderly woman.  The elderly male driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is being asked to contact Napanee OPP.

Dogs in Vehicles

Hot dogs weren’t just on the barbecue this weekend.

Kingston Police got half a dozen complaints about dogs being left in hot vehicles.

No charges were laid but the pet owners were warned not to do it again.

Leaving a pet in a vehicle can result in a criminal charge for animal cruelty.

Bear Spray

There was some excitement at an apartment building on Fraser Street on Saturday after someone set off mace.

Police, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene after a can of bear spray was released in a hallway of the building.

Several people suffered from coughing, sneezing and watery eyes – but nobody required treatment in hospital and police were not able to locate the culprit.

Epilepsy – Fire Truck Pull

13 teams were involved in raising funds for the Epilepsy Seizure and Disorder Centre in Kingston during its Fire Truck pull on the weekend.

About 100 people gathered in front of Kingston City Hall yesterday to brave the heat in the unique fund raising event.

Sadie’s Clydesdales was named most spirited and did it in the fastest time.

The Ottawa fire fighters team was the overall winner with its time and the amount of money it raised.

The total amount raised hasn’t been released yet.

La Salle Causeway

The dates haven’t been set yet – but the La Salle Causeway will be closed for two days next month.

Public Works and Government Services Canada says the bridge will be closed to complete a structural repair to make sure the bridge can continue to operate safely.

A news release says a taxi service will be provided for pedestrians to get across the waterway during the closure.
