Brownfield Deals – Developments

Kingston city council has started the ball rolling for Homestead Landholdings to build two high rise apartment towers on Queen Street in downtown Kingston.

Council approved a brownfields agreement for 51-57 Queen Street last night.  It’s the proposed site of a 21 storey tower that will include a 6 storey parking structure.  The city will buy 278 of the parking spaces.

Homestead will get a rebate on taxes for the estimated 3.3 million dollar cleanup of the site.

Council also gave the green light to a brownfield agreement for the former Nortel Property on Taylor Kidd Boulevard near Gardiners Road.  Taggart Corporation plans to build 450 high-density housing units, 420 homes, a seniors’ residence, a school and a commercial section on the land.

KEDCO Review – Council

Kingston city council will hold a special meeting this summer to discuss the future of the Kingston Economic Development Corporation.

The report of the KEDCO review committee recommends separating Tourism Kingston from the economic development agency and rebranding the economic development agency.

Mayor Bryan Paterson says he hopes changes can be made before city council holds budget sessions this fall.

Collins Bay

A lockdown is in place in the medium security unit at Collins Bay Institution following two inmate assaults.

The Correctional Service says the lockdown started at about 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Police Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is investigating the assaults.

Correctional officers have been conducting an exceptional search of the medium security unit and visits have been suspended until the search is completed.

Youth Diversion

Youth Diversion in Kingston has received a donation of $107,000 from Kingston Police.

The money came from its 175th anniversary gala.  The money was raised through ticket sales, donations, a silent auction and sponsorships.

Youth Diversion says the funding will be used to provide specialized programming for over 1,200 youth for no charge.

Queen’s – Research Funding

Queen’s University researchers have received over $13.5 million in research grants.

68 research projects at Queen’s received the funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Two grants totaling over $2.6 million go to continuing work on dark matter research at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory.

Spay Neuter Clinic – Fraud

The Kingston Napanee Spay Neuter Clinic says it does not have anyone going door to door to raise money for the clinic.

Kingston Police says the clinic in Bath has been getting calls about a man going door to door canvassing for them. ..But…it doesn’t have anyone doing a door to door canvass.

K-Town Kids Tri

The second annual K-Town Kids Triathlon will welcome up to 400 Participants tomorrow at the Memorial Centre.  Children from four to 15 have been invited to take part in the event featuring swimming, cycling and running.
