Drowning – Pittsburgh Quarry

The OPP dive team has been contacted after Kingston Fire and Rescue called off a search for a man in the water at the Pittsburgh Quarry on Highway 15.

The fire department was called to the popular swimming spot around 4:15 yesterday afternoon after witnesses reported a man went under water and failed to surface.

Firefighters had to carry their equipment, including an inflatable boat, to the water because of concrete barriers blocking the access road.  A bulldozer was brought in to remove the barriers shortly after emergency crews arrived on the scene.

The search was called off after they failed to find the man.

Fatal Crash

A 22 year old woman has died in a single vehicle crash on Highway 2 in Kingston.

The crash happened around 11:40 Friday night on Highway 2 near Gates Boulevard.

Police haven’t released the name of the woman but an online obituary identifies her as Jaime Lynn Barr.

Visitation for Jaime Lynn Barr takes place tomorrow at the James Reid Funeral Home on John Counter Boulevard and a service celebrating her life will be held at Cooke’s-Portsmouth United Church on Wednesday.

Racist Remarks

Providence Care is investigating after a complaint about a Kingston man about comments posted on Facebook by an employee of the hospital.  The comments were contained in a post about Muslim women in the RCMP being allowed to wear a hijab.

Rahime Juma of Kingston says he was shocked to see what he claims are racist comments and complained to the media and Providence Care.  The hospital says it has a well-defined code of conduct and are investigating the complaint.

Juma says he’s seen an increase in derogatory and racist comments in social media recently.  He thinks it has something to do with the popularity of Donald Trump in the U-S.

Back to School

It’s the final week of summer vacation for students.  School starts next Tuesday for most elementary, high school, Queen’s and St. Lawrence College students.

Cadets have already started their year at the Royal Military College of Canada.  About 250 students have marched through the arch to start their first year at RMC.  They won’t march through it again until they complete their training in four years.

Blues Festival

The Limestone City Blues Festival enjoyed great weather and large crowds.

The four day festival wrapped up its 20th anniversary with The Edgar Winter Band last night in Springer Market Square.

Concerts throughout the weekend attracted large crowds and the downtown was busy with traffic and pedestrians.
