Bus Tax

Kingston city council will tackle the issue of a bus tax when it gets into budget deliberations in November.  Council debated a proposal for a .5% tax increase in 2017 and 2018 on Tuesday night…but decided not to make a decision.

The money would be used to pay for increased service on both express and regular routes.

City staff will come back with a report on how Kingston Transit’s plan to increase ridership can be funded in other ways after Mayor Bryan Paterson suggested the money could come from new assessment as the city grows.

Third Crossing

The controversial Third Crossing will be in the spotlight tonight as the city hosts an open house to discuss the latest on the plan to build a bridge over the Cataraqui River.

It’s not a public meeting where people can stand up and make presentations.

Director of Engineering, Mark Van Buren, says members of the project team are looking forward to having one-to-one discussions with residents to provide information on the project and to get their feedback.

The session runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at La Salle Secondary School.

A second open house will take place early next year and then staff will present recommendations to council.  City council is expected to decide on whether to build the bridge this coming spring.

Laundry Room Driller – Arrest

A 31 year old man from Kingston has been arrested after police asked the public for help tracking down a man who damaged machines in the laundry room of a Princess Street apartment.  Surveillance video clearly showed the man who had used a drill to get coins out of machines at 844 Princess Street on Monday morning.

Police say tips from the public helped them track down a man at around 4:30 yesterday afternoon in the area of Pine and Alfred Streets.  He’s facing charges of theft, mischief, possession of break-in instruments and breach of probation.

Repeat Drug Bust

A Kingston man already facing drug trafficking charges has been busted again.

Kingston police executed a search warrant at a residence in the 200 block of Colborne Street last Friday and seized crystal meth, cocaine, marijuana, Percocet and magic mushrooms.  Police say the street value is estimated at $5,000.

Christopher Hulsman faces charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and breach of recognizance from the previous trafficking charge.

Arrest – Gun Incident

A 28 year old Kingston man has been charged after a trio of men confronted a resident of the Kozy Inn and demanded he hand over his laptop computer.

The man told police he saw what appeared to be a handgun.  Police found a pellet pistol and arrested 28 year old Howard Catley at the hotel late Sunday night.  He’s facing charges of possession of a dangerous weapon, uttering threats to cause bodily harm and breach of undertaking from a previous arrest.

Gun – Take Down

A 29 year old man from Hartington is facing charges after Kingston Police were told he was trying to sell a handgun.  The man was arrested when police swarmed a vehicle in a parking lot near Division and the 401 around 6 p.m. Friday.  Police seized a .25 calibre semi-automatic pistol.  The man has been charged with careless transport of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a restricted firearm without a proper license, and possession of a firearm while prohibited by court order.

CRCA – Off Leash Dogs

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority is cracking down on off leash dogs over the next few weeks.

It will be conducting enforcement blitzes at conservation areas after complaints from the public about dogs running free in its conservation areas.

Dog owners caught with an off-leash dogs will receive a $75 ticket.

Pink in the Rink

The Kingston Frontenacs have presented the Canadian Cancer Society’s breast cancer programs with a cheque for just of 21 hundred dollars.

The money came from last year’s Pink in the Rink event.

The Frontenacs wear pink jerseys again this fall.  The Pink in the Rink game will take place Friday, October 14 when they face-off against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
