Wolfe Islander

A major change to ferry service for Wolfe Island residents is quickly approaching.
The Wolfe Islander 3 is due to go into dry dock for service this month.  The MTO has announced the lake crossing permit has been issued and it is waiting to find out the date for the ferry to undergo major service.
It will be in dry dock until the end of June – possibly longer.
The Frontenac II will be moved from Amherst Island to Wolfe Island to replace the Wolfe Islander…but it holds 20 fewer vehicles and about 60 fewer passengers.
An Environment Assessment looking at a second ferry to serve Wolfe Island will start this summer.

Pulse Point App

A mobile app that can save lives is catching on in Kingston.
The PulsePoint app has been downloaded over 11 hundred times since it was launched by Kingston Fire and Rescue two weeks ago.
The app alerts people who know CPR that somebody nearby needs help and shows the location of nearest automated external defibrillator.
Queen’s University researcher Steven Brooks will hold a demonstration of the technology and signup session in the main gym of the Queen’s Athletic and Recreation Centre from 1:30 to 2pm today.
The university says there are thousands of students, alumni, faculty, and staff with up-to-date CPR training.

Dog Euthanized

A sad end to the story of a dog found abandoned in Kingston last week.
A neglected male Shih Tzu type dog was found in the Division Street and Barbara Avenue area.
The dog was named Walter by staff at the Kingston Humane Society shelter.  It was suffering from a variety of medical issues.
It turns out Walter’s health issues were too serious to treat and the dog – estimated to be about 15 years old was put down by a vet on the weekend.
The SPCA is still trying to locate the owner.

Cycling

Two projects in the Kingston area could get funding under a multi-million dollar program to promote a more cycling friendly Ontario.
15 million dollars will be spent on improving existing routes.  Proposals include highway 33 west of Kingston and Highway 137 at the Thousand Islands Parkway.
$10 million will also be given to municipalities to help expand cycling routes.
