Teachers Update

The Limestone District School Board says schools will remain open next week despite what’s expected to be job action by elementary teachers.
The school board says programs for the students…including extra-curricular activities will also continue.
The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario hasn’t outlined exactly what it has planned for next week but the 800 teachers for the Limestone Board will begin a work to rule campaign.
The union is meeting with members today to outline what action will be taken starting on Monday.

Robberies – Sentence

A Kingston man who robbed four stores in less than 24 hours earlier this year has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Brent Mielnner pleaded guilty on Tuesday to the robberies that took place in February.
He robbed the stores including the Mac’s on Bath Road and the Food Basics and was arrested in the Frontenac Mall.

Ontario Street Closed

Kingston Police haven’t released any details about an emergency that closed Ontario Street for over six hours yesterday.
Police and paramedics responded to an emergency medical call at 3:30 yesterday afternoon and police closed Ontario Street between Earl and Gore Streets.
Police aren’t saying what happened but the incident involved a man in the apartment building at 85 Ontario Street.


St. Lawrence – Budget

The St. Lawrence College Board of Governors has approved a balanced budget of 106.3 million dollars.
The college says the budget will allow it to continue key strategic priorities, including initiatives for growth in international recruitment.

Heritage Fair

The 20th annual Kingston Regional Heritage Fair brings history to life today.
The work of 200 grade 6 to 8 students is being featured today in McArthur Hall at Queen’s.
Students will be spending the day in workshops and other learning activities.
Their projects will be on display for the public starting at 4pm.
Award winners will advance to the Ontario Provincial Heritage Fair and a national video contest.

Fort Henry – Dance

They’ll be dancing at Fort Henry today.
The fort will be hosting 3,000 students today from the Limestone Board and Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic Board.
They’ll perform a variety of dance routines for KFL&A Public Health’s sixth annual Celebration of Dance event…a fun way to increase physical activity.

Traffic

Traffic notes this morning…
The 401 is down to one lane in both directions at the Cataraqui River until next week for an engineering investigation.
The Kingston Mills swing bridge is closed from 9am to 3pm today for maintenance.
Maintenance work continues on the LaSalle Causeway.  The work is being down outside rush hour – but is still causing traffic delays.

NDP – Alberta

There was a little taste of Prince Edward County in the New Democrats Alberta election sweep.
Former Prince Edward County resident Jamie Kleinsteuber ran for the NDP and easily won in the Calgary-Northern Hills riding on Tuesday. The 38-year-old Kleinsteuber grew up in the County and graduated from Prince Edward Collegiate Institute.

Cemetery – Drone Mapping

A drone has been used by a Kingston company to map the Cataraqui Cemetery.
Kingston Aerials will use low level photography to produce highly accurate mapping of the site.
It is part of a long-term project to identify every monument on the property so people will be able to easily find someone’s burial plot.
The cemetery contains the graves of 15 thousand people…including Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald.
