LaSalle Causeway – Closed Aug. 25th & 26th
The dates have been made for the Closer of The Lasalle Causeway and it’s fast approaching!
Public Works and Government Services Canada plans to close the causeway from 12:01 a.m on Aug. 25th to 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 26th for structural repairs.
A complimentary taxi shuttle service will be available to carry pedestrians to either side of the bridge via Hwy. 401 and Boats that are less than four metres high above the waterline can pass under the causeway’s east bridge.
Natural Gas – Utilities Kingston – FYI
On Thursday morning, Kingston residents may notice a venting flame or gas odour at Lower University Avenue and Stuart Street, but there’s no need for alarm.
The sights and smells will be a result of a planned release of natural gas by Utilities Kingston for any necessary repairs and is scheduled to take just an hour.
The release will not affect Kingston General Hospital or Queen’s University.

Emergency Landing at YGK
A Toronto-bound flight had to return to the Kingston airport yesterday for an emergency landing after smoke was seen in the cabin.
Air Canada flight 7255 left Norman Rogers Airport just before noon yesterday for the 45-minute flight to Pearson International Airport when several of the 17 passengers noticed the smoke and told the flight crew.
The emergency landing prompted the facility’s emergency response plan to be put into action where Kingston Fire and Rescue, Kingston Police and Frontenac EMS were called to the scene, but there were no injuries among the passengers and crew.

City Council – Kingston’s Ball Diamonds
The hard work of a group of citizens concerned about maintenance and safety at Kingston’s ball diamonds has paid off.
Council passed a motion last night calling on parks and recreation staff to address no fewer than 148 issues raised by the residents in a comprehensive report.
The motion calls on staff to consult with the citizens and report back to the arts and recreation committee in February with a timetable to fix the problems.

Police Officers Injured – Belleville
A motorist has been charged with careless driving after two police officers were injured while investigating a traffic accident in Belleville.
Police say the officers had responded to a three-vehicle collision in the north end of the city last night when another vehicle, not involved in the accident, struck their cruiser from behind.
The officers were taken to Belleville General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The driver was not injured.

Prince Edward Country – Car Accident Investigation
The Prince Edward County OPP are investigating a car crash on County Road 3.
A single vehicle struck a hydro pole just before noon yesterday.
No injuries were reported and the road was reopened later that afternoon.

CFB Trenton Command
There’s a new commander at C-F-B Trenton, Canada’s largest air force base.
A change of command ceremony was held yesterday to welcome the new Wing Commander, Colonel Colin Keiver.
He succeeds Brigadier-[brig-uh-deer] General David Lowthian, who had been the base commander since August of 2013 and is now deputy commander of 1 Canadian Air Division Headquarters at C-F-B Winnipeg.
Keiver knows Trenton well, having been the commanding officer of 4-3-6 Transport Squadron from 2010 to 2012.

Basketball Star  – Charged
An 18-year-old high school basketball star has been charged in a weekend hit-and-run in Ottawa that left an off-duty officer with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Eddie Ekiyor has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident and criminal negligence causing bodily harm who was asked to file for a claim for their car accident injuries that was pretty much severe.
He was taken into custody Saturday and released on bail Sunday.
Ekiyor had previously received scholarship offers from top-level N-C-double-A programs.

Ontario – Pension Plan
Premier Kathleen Wynne and Prime Minister Stephen Harper are locking horns again over the proposed Ontario Retirement Pension Plan.
Wynne says Harper is standing in the way of the plan, while the prime minister says he’s happy to block what he calls “an enormous tax hike.”
Harper went out of his way to attack the Liberal government’s plan yesterday during a campaign stop north of Toronto, saying the mandatory contributions from employers and workers would kill jobs.
Wynne said the plan is needed because Harper refuses to enhance the Canada Pension Plan and many Ontario workers are not saving enough for retirement.

Duffy Trial
What could be the most dramatic part of the trial of former Conservative senator Mike Duffy is due to begin today in Ottawa.
Testifying as a Crown witness will be Nigel Wright, Prime Minister Harper’s former right-hand man.
When he was chief of staff in early 2013, Wright gave 90-thousand dollars of his own money to repay Duffy’s disallowed expense claims.
That led to charges of fraud on the government, bribery, and breach of trust being filed against Duffy, who has pleaded not guilty.
Wright was investigated by the R-C-M-P but not charged.
