Nurse Charged – St. Mary’s

A 29 year old Kingston woman has been charged with stealing the pain medication of dying patients at St. Mary’s of the Lake hospital.

Providence Care operates the hospital and revealed in July that a nurse was suspected of stealing hydromorphone meant for palliative care patients.

Kingston Police arrested Laura Denouden on Friday.

Denouden has been charged with forgery, theft under five thousand dollars, mischief, possession of a controlled substance and 17 counts of break and enter.

A news release says she has been charged with accessing a secured medication room in the hospital while she was not on duty.

It says detectives found hydromorphone had been stolen over a period of approximately two-and-a-half years beginning in 2013.

Denouden has been released on a promise to appear at a future court date.

Student Dies – Allergic Reaction

A first year student at Queen’s University has died after suffering a severe allergic reaction.

Reports say 18 year old Andrea Mariano of Thornhill died after ordering a smoothie last week.

A relative has said Mariano had severe allergies to dairy and peanuts.

Queen’s has lowered flags and issued a statement saying it continues to support Andrea’s friends and family, and will be reviewing its services.

Tri-Board Transportation, the agency that runs the bus service for schools in the Kingston area posted a tweet this morning saying – “Anaphylaxis is life threatening! Please don’t allow children to come to the bus eating peanut butter. Peanut allergies are commonplace.”

 Reveal the Salaries

A Kingston city councillor is leading the charge to have the Kingston Economic Development Corporation put on the sunshine list.  Councillor Jim Neill says the Kingston Frontenac Public Library should also have to reveal the number of staff who earn $100,000 a year or more.

The issue has become the subject of a public outcry after city council was told last week KEDCO is exempt from the list because it is governed by the Corporations Act.  The Library isn’t on the sunshine list either.

Kingston Police used to claim an exemption from the list – but former chief Stephen Tanner said it was unfair because the force gets most of its funding from Kingston taxpayers and it’s now on the sunshine list.
