Arthur McDonald – Breakthrough Prize

The Queen’s University Professor Emeritus who won the Nobel prize has won another major honour.  Arthur McDonald was at the NASA Ames Research Centre in California yesterday to accept the 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.

Work by McDonald’s team at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory led to new discoveries about neutrinos and new possibilities in the study of particle physics.

Wolfe Islander

Life is returning to normal for Wolfe Island residents after having to live without their regular ferry service for over half a year.

The Wolfe Islander III left Hamilton at 6:30 Saturday night and was back in service during the noon hour yesterday. The ferry had been in dry dock since April and was due to return to service in Kingston for the summer.

The Frontenac II is has now returned to service for Amherst Island.

Commuter News

John Counter Boulevard is closed between Portsmouth Avenue and Princess Street this week.  Crews are working on replacing four large culverts.

Local traffic will be able to access the train station and businesses on the west side of the CN tracks from Princess Street.

Fire – Burns

Fire in a duplex on Uxbridge Crescent in Kingston has resulted in a woman suffering serious burns.

Firefighters found flames coming from the rear of the home at 920 Uxbridge shortly after midnight Saturday.

They managed to knock down the fire quickly but it took several hours to put out all the hotspots.

The woman was taken to hospital in Kingston with burns to the lower part of her body and was transferred to hospital in Toronto.

A family in the other unit of the duplex was forced to stay in a hotel because of smoke damage.

Total damage is estimated at $175,000.

Job Money

The Ontario government is investing 2.8 million dollars in Kingston over the next two years to help young people find jobs.  The money for the Youth Job Connection program will help 15 to 29 year olds who aren’t currently working or in school to get into a pre-employment training program or other mentorship program.

Man Charged

A 52 year old man from Loyalist Township has a bail hearing tomorrow after being slapped with over a dozen charges following a confrontation in the woods near Yarker.

Napanee OPP says a man used a firearm in a threatening and dangerous manner late last Wednesday afternoon.

The OPP tactical team executed a search warrant at a home on Wilson Road in Loyalist Township on Thursday and arrested Gary Kelly.

He faces charges including assault with a weapon, possession of a restricted or prohibited weapon, pointing a firearm and threatening to cause death or serious bodily harm.

Joy Ride – Arrest

A joy ride on Highway 62 in Prince Edward County Saturday night has resulted in charges…including impaired driving.

Police stopped a vehicle around 11 Saturday night and arrested the driver.

26 year old Thomas McCumber of Picton has been charged with stunt driving, impaired driving and possession of a controlled substance.

Elite Sniper – WritersFest

The former leader of the Canadian Forces elite sniper team will be reading from his memoirs in Kingston tonight.

Jody Mitic lost both of his legs below the knees when he stepped on a landmine in Afghanistan.

Mitic’s book is called…Unflinching

He has founded the Never Quit Foundation devoted to helping physically challenged athletes realize their dreams.

Mitic is a former contestant on the Amazing Race Canada and is currently and Ottawa city councillor.

His talk is being presented by Kingston WritersFest in Currie Hall at the Royal Military College starting at 7:30 tonight.
