CFB Kingston

The Trudeau government will unveil the details today of how Canada will take in 25-thousand Syrian refugees. The government is expected to say it is unlikely to meet its deadline of resettling that number by the end of the year.

Part of the plan is to house refugees at Canadian Forces Bases. CFB Kingston is getting ready to host up to 600 refugees.

About 480 personnel at CFB Kingston have been ordered to move into shared accommodation in rooms holding four people.  No families are being relocated and the soldiers who do have to bunk with others will have their accommodation fees adjusted.

CFB Trenton is getting ready for up to 950 refugees.

New Era

Ontario is about to enter a new era of cap and trade.

Environment Minister Glen Murray says the provinces long term plan to fight climate change will outline how it is going to reduce emissions by 80 percent from 1990 levels by the year 2050.  The Premier has already said Ontario will introduce a cap-and-trade system to put a price on carbon emissions and reduce greenhouse gases.

Police – New Dog

The newest member of the Kingston Police force often falls asleep at the grind… but that’s okay, its all part of the job.

Vern is a yellow lab – golden retriever cross who has been donated to Kingston Police by National Service Dogs. It is the first dog to serve with a police force in Ontario as a Canine-Assisted Intervention dog.

Detective Constable Melanie Jeffries with the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit uses Vern to help put people at ease while they are talking with her about traumatic incidents.

The dog puts its head on the lap of the person being interviewed and often falls asleep…Jeffries says even an occasional snore helps break the tension.
