401 Closed

The 401 westbound was closed in Napanee this morning due to a collision involving two tractor trailers.

The driver of one of the big rigs had to be removed by emergency services.

One of the trucks has flipped over and is blocking both lanes…the other had the side ripped off.

Dozens of cases of Perrier were spilled onto the highway.

Traffic was being re-routed from the westbound 401 at County Road 41.

Wolfe Island Ferry

You won’t be able to get there from here for a few hours today.

The Wolfe Islander III is going out of service from 9:30 this morning until 2 this afternoon.

The Ministry of Transportation says a propulsion component has to be replaced.

Security Exercise

You can expect to see military personnel from CFB Kingston conducting identification checks and searching vehicles today at the four gates leading into the base as it prepares for the arrival of Syrian refugees.

Members of the Base Security Auxiliary Force will be conducting the exercise between 7:30 this morning and 4:00 this afternoon.

Hospital Thefts

Thieves have been busy at Kingston General Hospital.

Kingston Police have released video surveillance photos of suspects in three separate thefts last month.

The items stolen from a staff room include a MacBook Pro, a wallet with credit cards, I-D and car keys.  A physician’s stethoscope, purse and wallet were stolen from a teaching room and a hospital workers jacket containing keys was also taken from a lower level office.

Kingston – Illegal Smokes

Survey says – just over 28% of the cigarettes smoked in Kingston are considered to be contraband.

The Ontario Convenience Store Association did its research by collecting cigarette butts at five different locations in the cities were it conducted the survey.  It says Kingston has the fifth highest rate of illegal tobacco use in Ontario.

The Convenience Store Association wants tougher enforcement of regulations to reduce the number of illegal cigarettes that cut into their sales of tobacco.

Drug Bust

A man and woman from Amherstview have been busted for dealing crystal meth.

The OPP says it was tipped off by a 9-1-1 hang up call that originated from a vehicle in Odessa around six last Sunday evening.

Police stopped a vehicle and seized several individual baggies containing crystal methamphetamine.

27 year old Douglas Wood and 21 year old Jessie King of Amherstview have been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Wood also faces charges of failing to comply with an Undertaking and two counts of Failing to Comply with Probation.

Hanukkah – Kingston

The Kingston Jewish Council has invited the community to join in Hanukkah celebrations at a special event tonight in Confederation Park.  Light up the Night starts at 5:30 this evening in the park across from Kingston City Hall.

Organizers say the event is kid friendly songs, dances, crafts and dreidle games.

Today is day four of the eight day Hanukkah celebration.

 Child Psychiatry

Children and teens with psychiatric problems should be able to get help a little faster in Kingston thanks to a grant from the Royal Bank Foundation.

The foundation will officially hand over $25,000 to support Child and Adolescent Psychiatry to Hotel Dieu Hospital and Pathways for Children and Youth today.

The grant will support the Expanded Triage Program which is supposed to ensure patients are referred to appropriate care, faster.
