Kingston Pen

You will have a say on the future of Kingston Penitentiary and the surrounding area.

The city has announced a partnership with the Correctional Service and two other government agencies.

It’s the first step in discussing what the future will be for Kingston Pen…the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour Marina and the Olympic Harbour building.

A news release from the city says the landowners will work together to provide residents with a chance to have their say on what they think the area should feature.

Public meetings will take place next year – but no dates have been set.

Big Dig

You’ve heard the cliché – short term pain for long term gain.

Downtown businesses will have to grin and bear it again as Kingston gets set to usher in the New Year with another Big Dig.  Officials met with downtown businesses yesterday to discuss the reconstruction of Princess Street from Bagot to Clergy Streets.  The work will start on January 4th and the major portion of the project is scheduled to be finished by Labour Day.

Energy Conservation

People in Kingston saved enough energy between 2011 and 2014 to power 5,714 homes for an entire year.

Utilities Kingston says customers went over their energy saving target by almost 124%.

Kingston Hydro is one of only five Ontario electricity distributors to exceed both provincially-mandated conservation targets.  A news release from Utilities Kingston thanks customers for helping make the city a provincially-recognized leader in electricity conservation.

Robbery – B& E

The 21 year old man charged with robbing a north end gas bar early Wednesday morning has now been charged with breaking into a home earlier the same day.

An officer recognized some items the man put in a property bin at police headquarters as items reported stolen from a residence on Foster Street.

Residents reported a 48 inch television, multiple pairs of shoes, cash and jewelry was stolen.

Police say it appears as though the man arrested for the robbery was wearing a pair of the stolen shoes.

21 year old Brendan Fitzgerald has been charged with robbery and break and enter.

Kingston Arrest – Man Orders Drinks

Kingston police say a man arrested for public intoxication was so drunk, he tried to order drinks from officers at police headquarters.  The 61 year old man was arrested in downtown Kingston Wednesday night.

When he was put in a cell he asked the officers to bring him a tequila and a whiskey on the rocks.  He didn’t get the drinks but police say once the guy sobered up he was handed a 65-dollar fine for public intoxication.

Richardson Stadium

The first Queen’s football game to be played in the newly renovated Richardson Stadium will take place on September 17th.  Work is well underway to build the new stadium and the Ontario University Athletics Association has released the 2016 football schedule.

Queen’s won’t play a home game until Week 4 of the season – but the University says it will be worth the wait because they’ll be hosting one of their biggest rivals – the Western Mustangs and the game will take place in the new stadium.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is holding its Rock the Red Kettle Christmas Concert, auction and artisans market tonight.

It takes place at the Salvation Army Citadel from 7pm to 11pm. More than a dozen musicians will be performing…there’s a silent auction and artisan market.
