Climate Change Action Plan

Ontario government officials are refusing to confirm or deny a report Ontario is going to phase out the use of natural gas for home heating.  A Globe and Mail report says new homes built starting in 2030 would have to use alternative energy and not fossil fuels.

The 57-page Climate Change Action Plan was obtained by The Globe and Mail.

It says owners of homes and buildings will also receive incentives to install geothermal and solar heating and rebates will be given to drivers who buy electric vehicles.

The mother of a woman murdered in Texas last year has issued a plea for the return of two tablets and jewelry stolen from her home in Kingston.

The Acer tablets contain pictures of Dawn Larson and the jewelry belonged to the woman who was the victim of a murder suicide in February of last year.

Her mother Karin has posted an open letter on Facebook asking for the return of the tablets and jewelry.

Dawn’s best friend, Shanna Robinson has also asked people buying used goods to be aware of the theft and has asked pawn shops to keep an eye out for the items.

Drug Bust

It turned out to be an unlucky Friday the 13th for a Kingston drug dealer.

The Kingston Police Drug Unit stopped a taxi on Friday and arrested the passenger on charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking.  Police seized cocaine and methamphetamine worth $125,000.  The person who was busted has also been charged with two counts of Breach of a Conditional Sentence Order.

ATV Theft

The Loyalist detachment of the OPP is investigating the theft of an ATV from a farmer’s field in the 2100 block of Palace Road.  The owner reported the theft last Thursday and believes the ATV was taken sometime between May 10th and 12th.  The Red 2005 Honda 500 had aftermarket rims and anyone with information about the theft is being asked to contact Loyalist OPP or Crime Stoppers.

Wildfires – Don’t Cause ‘Em

Fire departments in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington are asking people to help prevent grass fires and forest fires.

A news release from the mutual aid organization covering the region says the leading cause of preventable wildfires in Ontario is campfires.

The news release urges people to only build campfires on bare soil or exposed rock that is well sheltered from the wind and to make sure the fi8re is doused with water and completely out before leaving the site.

It also says you should check on burning restrictions or bylaws before burning grass or brush around your home or cottage and make sure to extinguish cigarettes and other smoking material before disposing of what is left.

Green Bin

The city is asking you not to put grass clippings and other yard waste in your green bins.

Solid Waste Manager Heather Roberts says it is an expensive way to get rid of the stuff.  She says the green bins are meant for food waste. Roberts says grass clippings can be left on your lawn and yard waste can go into a backyard composter or the stuff can be taken to the Kingston Area Recycling Centre.

It costs three times more to compost material from green bins as it does to process yard waste brought to the Centre.
