Heat Warning

Environment Canada says hot humid weather will continue today and it is keeping its heat warning in place.  People in Kingston will get a bit of relief from the wind blowing off Lake Ontario…but the temperature is expected to reach 30 today with humidex values near 40.

Cooler air will move into the area starting tomorrow…but the real relief isn’t expected until Saturday when the high is forecast at 23.

Pets and Heat

The Kingston Humane Society is asking you not to forget your animals during the heat wave. It says pet owners should keep animals in the coolest place possible…in the shade of inside.  It says extreme heat can lead to heat exhaustion and death in pets.

It says people should never leave pets unattended in a vehicle and owners of animals in distress due to heat may be subject to charges of abuse and fines.

Lottery Luck

A regular morning walk has produced $35,000 for a Kingston woman.

Laurel Belanger and her husband walk four kilometres every morning.  Part of their routine is buying a lottery ticket and scratching them when they get home.

The Instant Bingo Double Dollars ticket she recently bought produced a top prize win of $35,000.

Canadian Army – Peacekeeping

A leading expert says Canada’s army is capable of helping its NATO allies in Eastern Europe while simultaneously launching a U-N peacekeeping mission elsewhere.  Walter Dorn is a professor at the Canadian Forces Staff College in Kingston and an adviser to the federal government.  He says the commitment of 450 troops to a NATO deployment in Latvia puts a strain on the number available for peace operations.  But he says Canada can still supply up to a-thousand troops to a U-N mission and not be stretched too thin.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan says controlling the spread of Islamic militants across the Middle East and Africa is part of the government’s thinking in determining where Canada’s eventual peacekeeping mission will be focused.

Royal LePage – House Prices

Survey says…home prices in Kingston were flat during the second quarter of this year.  The Royal LePage house price survey says the average price of a home in Kingston was just over $313,000 dollars.  Area manager Bob Armer says there’s been a drop in listings in the Kingston housing market and if that doesn’t change prices will see a steady increase through the rest of the year.
