Power Plant Shuttered

A privately owned and operated power generating station west of Kingston has stopped producing electricity.

Northland Power’s Kingston Generating Station shut down last night.

The government didn’t renew its contract with Northland.  Northland says the plant produces the cheapest electricity in the province.  It’s now looking for new contracts to keep the plant operating.

If the plant is forced to close it will mean the loss of 18 jobs.

The power plant uses natural gas and has been operating since 1997 on Taylor-Kidd Boulevard near Millhaven Road.

Parks Commission – Tree Meeting

The St. Lawrence Parks Commission will hold a public information session after people complained about trees being cut down at the Ivy Lea Campground.

The parks commission has marked hundreds of trees at its parks with pink paint and says those trees are being assessed by arborists who will determine if they have to be removed.

It says the tree removal project has been suspended until residents can participate in the public information open house in Lansdowne on Saturday.  It’s being held from 9 a.m. to noon in the Lansdowne Community Hall.

Zoning Change – Development

Kingston city council is expected to approve a zoning change to clear the way for a major residential development at Taylor Kidd Boulevard and Gardiners Road.

The city’s planning committee has approved changing the zoning of the former Nortel property from industrial to residential.  The developer wants to build over a thousand housing units on the land behind the Riocan Centre.

If council approves the zoning change the developer will have to clean up environmental contamination on the site which has already been approved for tax relief under Kingston’s brown field’s program.

Napanee Barn Fire

Friends and neighbours are pulling together to help a Napanee family after their barn and its contents were destroyed in a fire Monday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Seven horse normally kept in the barn were in a field at the time and weren’t injured.

But – the barn was destroyed along with its contents…including hay, a hay bailer and two tractors.

Hay is needed for the horses and it can be dropped off at the site.

A GoFundMe account has been set up and gift certificates can also be purchased to help replace lost equipment at either the Country Depot on Mill St in Napanee or at the Wilton Tack Shop.
