Grad Student Poisoned

Kingston Police say a Queens University graduate student is facing charges of poisoning another student.  Police say the victim reported his lunches had a bitter taste and were making him ill and some water he drank had a chemical taste and smell.  He accused his former roommate and fellow researcher with poisoning him.

Police say a man was caught on video administering a clear liquid in the area where the victim’s lunch was kept on January 29th.

A man has been charged with administering a noxious chemical and assault with a weapon.

Plaza Re-Opening

The city’s appeals committee has voted 5-0 in favor of re-issuing the business license for the Plaza Gentleman’s Club.

The Plaza won its appeal yesterday with the vote.

The city originally refused to issue the license for this year after Kingston Police refused to sign off on the renewal because a former co-owner faces two drug charges.  The Plaza appealed saying the man doesn’t work there anymore.

It’s hoping to re-open tomorrow.

Impaired Driving

Napanee OPP have charged a 29 year old woman from Kingston with impaired driving and refusing to provide a breath sample after a single vehicle crash on Highway 41 yesterday morning.

Police were called by a Good Samaritan who stopped to assist the driver at 11:18 yesterday morning and thought the driver may be impaired.

Donation Jar – Second Suspect Arrested

The second suspect in the theft of money from a charitable donation jar at the service centre on Centennial Drive in October has been arrested in Whitby.

Kingston Police say a 34 year old woman from Belleville was picked up by Whitby OPP on Monday.

A 41 year old man from Bath was arrested in Toronto on December 19th and charged with three counts of theft.

Police say the same pair also stole items from the service centre on several other occasions.

Building Internship – New House

The latest house built by high school students in the Building Construction Internship Program will be open to the public today in Amherstview.  Students will be showing off their work from noon to 2 p.m. and 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. today at 224 Pratt Drive in Amherstview.

Queen’s – Cannabis Campaign

Queen’s University business students have created three campaigns to educate high school students about the dangers of using marijuana.  The business students worked with students studying psychiatry to develop the marketing campaigns.

They formed three working groups to develop social media campaigns aimed at helping students in Eastern Ontario make informed decisions about using marijuana.

Queen’s Apprenticeship Program

A new apprenticeship program has been launched in a bid to provide Arts and Science students at Queen’s with meaningful full time jobs in Kingston.

The program is the idea of Alan Rottenberg who is also providing the funding for the program.  It’s a partnership between Rottenberg, Queen’s University and the Kingston Economic Development Corporation.

10 Queen’s Arts and Science students will be matched with 10 Kingston companies for a four month paid apprenticeship that is focused on leading to full time employment.
