Kingston – Homicide

A 19 year old man from Ottawa is facing a charge of second degree murder after a 38 year old Kingston man was shot and died in hospital.  Kingston Police say Jean Guy Vincent died after being shot at the Kozy Inn at around 1a.m. yesterday. He lived in one of the units at the motel.  Police say Aaron Lewis returned to the scene around 2 a.m. and surrendered to a police officer.  A rifle has been seized.  Police say the two men knew each other but they aren’t commenting on the motive for the shooting.

Crash – Development Drive

There’s no word yet on the charges a driver is facing after a car wound up on its roof in the middle of Development Drive.

Witnesses say the driver was speeding on Development Drive yesterday afternoon…just missed hitting a vehicle before crashing into a trailer being towed by a pickup truck and flipped over.

Sir John A – Conversation Begins

The City of Kingston is launching its review of Sir John A. Macdonald’s legacy today.  You’ll be able to do an online survey through the city’s website and there’s an opportunity to comment in the Sir John A. Macdonald room at Kingston City Hall.  The city says people will be able to fill out a comment card that will be posted on the wall of the room.

Cultural Heritage manager Jennifer Campbell says it is an opportunity for an inclusive dialogue about how the city tells its story and is not just about how it should manage artifacts connected to Canada’s first prime minister…like his statue in City Park.  Campbell says your input will be used to shape plans for a number of facilitated sessions in 2019.

Macdonald has become a controversial figure after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission highlighted his government’s policies to control Canada’s Indigenous people.

Fairfield Manor East

The situation at the privately owned Fairfield Manor east is deteriorating as it faces closing at the end of October.

The 23 residents at Fairfield Manor East have been left without staff to take care of them and without food – the chef has resigned.  Five staff members from Kingsdale Chateau provided lunch for the residents yesterday.  Kingston Fire and Rescue has firefighters on duty at the home to make sure residents can be safely evacuated if there’s a fire.  The city says it is continuing to monitor the situation at the home.

Fairfield Manor East is scheduled to close October 31st after its licence was revoked by the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority in early July.

MagicScroll

The MagicScroll is the latest high tech device from the Queen’s University Human Media Lab.

It features a flexible screen that can be rolled or unrolled around a cylinder that contains the computer.  The two rotary wheels at either end of the cylinder allow the user to scroll through information on the touch screen.  Human Media Lab Director Roel Vertegaal says its light weight and cylindrical body makes it much easier to hold with one hand than an iPad and when it is rolled up, it fits in your pocket and can be used as a phone.
