Arrest – Attempt Robbery

 

Kingston Police have arrested a man after an attempted robbery at the East Side Market at Division and Eliot Avenue on Tuesday night.

A man walked into the store and demanded money but left empty handed.

A 33 year old Kingston man was arrested last night and was being held for a bail hearing today.

 

Sexual Assault – Guilty Plea

 

A 27 year old Kingston man has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman in downtown Kingston on August 18th.

Nicholas Johnson was arrested after a woman was attacked by a man who broke into her downtown apartment.

Johnson still faces charges of break and enter, choking and forcible confinement.  Those charges will be dealt with when he is sentenced for sexual assault on January 29th.

 

Poisoning – Queen’s

 

A Queen’s undergraduate student from China will be sentenced later this year after pleading guilty to poisoning a fellow researcher at the university.

26 year old Ziejie Wang had been charged with administering a noxious substance and aggravated assault by endangering the life of the man….but no reason was given in court for the poisoning incidents.

They took place between January 8th and January 29th and were captured on a video surveillance camera setup by the victim.  Wang had used a substance to poison food the victim had in the lab where they were working.

 

15 & Fairness

 

The Kingston $15 and Fairness campaign has held a rally to protest the Ford government’s changes in labour laws.  The protest was held at Princess and Macdonnell Streets last night.  The target was the Tim Horton’s franchise.

A group of about 70 people gathered on the sidewalk to protest the Ford government’s Bill 47…The Making Ontario Open for Business Act.  It replaces labour reforms introduced by the previous Liberal government and includes the cancellation of the $15 minimum wage.

The numbers don’t lie and indicate there was a problem with people not being included on the voters list in Kingston for the municipal election.

The City of Kingston has released the official election results and it turns the number of eligible voters in Kingston declined by over 7 thousand from 2014.

The city says there were 83,608 eligible voters this year…a decline from over 90 thousand in 2014.

Voter turnout this year was 41.3%…almost 2 full percentage points higher than four years ago…but in 2014 there were actually 1,330 more people who voted compared to this year.

Penguins

 

The Kingston Y Penguins are swimming their 17th annual relay today.  The marathon style charitable event involves team members swimming in relay fashion for an entire 24-hour period.  The relays starts at 9am today and wraps up at 9am tomorrow at the Kingston YMCA on Wright Crescent.
