Man Injured – Pedestrian Collision

A collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle in Kingston’s west end sent a man to hospital and closed Bayridge Drive to traffic on Monday afternoon.

The man suffered non-life threatening injuries around 4pm yesterday in the collision at Bayridge Drive and Coverdale Drive.  The driver remained at the scene and Bayridge was re-opened to traffic following the police investigation.  There was no word on whether the driver will face charges.

 

Fire – Highway 38

Investigators were on the scene of a house fire on Highway 38 just north of the4 401 yesterday afternoon to try and determine the cause.  The fire was reported at the sprawling home on the Otter Creek Farms property around 9:30 yesterday morning.  The fire caused extensive damage.

There were no reports of injuries.

Highway 38 was closed for about three hours.

 

Arrest – Illegal Cigarettes 

A 64 year old man from Quebec man has been arrested after a vehicle was containing almost 3 million cigarettes was stopped on the 401 in Napanee.

Police pulled over the U-Haul truck at 12:45 yesterday afternoon.

The cube van contained 296 cases of cigarettes; the equivalent of 2.96 million individual cigarettes.

The man appears for a bail hearing today on charges of possession of contraband for the purpose of sale, transportation of contraband and failing to comply with a probation order. He is also facing two additional charges under Ontario’s Tobacco Tax Act.

 

Man Charged – Trafficking

A 24 year old Kingston man has been arrested on an outstanding warrant for assault after a domestic dispute.

Police were called to a residence in downtown Kingston on Friday night – the man had left but was arrested on Johnson Street.  Police seized a large quantity of cocaine and now the man not only faces a charge of assault, he has also been charged with drug trafficking.

 

RCMP – No Comment

The RCMP isn’t commenting about why a surveillance plane has been flying over Kingston since early January.

Residents in the area of the Norman Rogers Airport say the daily flights begin at dusk and continue until the early morning hours.

The Mounties use a variety of planes but say to maintain the integrity of its investigations it does not comment on where or why the planes are operating.

 

Tugboat – Ice Breaking

A heads up from Picton Terminals for people who enjoy ice fishing or snowmobiling on the ice.

The tugboat Sherry Lynn S. is breaking ice from the Glenora Ferry through the Gap to Millhaven all winter and Picton Terminals says it wants to make sure people are aware of the ice conditions so they can stay safe.

 

Birthday Bash – Charity

A 65th birthday bash that a Kingston woman used as a charity fund raiser back in November has resulted in donations to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at KGH and the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario.

Val Hamilton and Jo Matyas organized the Heatwave Motown Dance Party and yesterday…the $12,610 that was raised was donated to the NICU and Cancer Centre.

 

Pets as Family

A Queen’s University professor says considering your pets as a family member is good for your health.

An article by Professor Lisa Carver that was published in an academic journal called The Conversation says research shows children who grow up with a pet develop higher levels of empathy and lower stress levels.

Carver says her research and the research of her colleagues also shows there a numerous health benefits for humans who have an emotional attachment to pets.
