Freezing Rain

Freezing rain left a coating of ice on things this morning.

Crews were out treating the roads and there were no reports of collisions caused by road conditions.  A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle at Bath Road and Queen Mary Road shortly before 8:00 a.m.  Kingston Police were on the scene investigating.

School transportation was operating on a regular basis today.

New Bridge Design

Kingston’s new bridge over the Cataraqui River will have large concreate arches supporting the roadway instead of long steel spans with steel arches above the road.  Mayor Bryan Paterson revealed the new design at a Chamber of Commerce meeting yesterday.  The bridge will contain a lot more concrete and won’t have long open steel spans or steel arches above the road.  The change in design is because of the 25% tariff on steel imposed by U-S President Donald Trump. Paterson says the final design has almost been completed and the use of more concrete is to try and stay on the $180 million budget.  Construction is slated to begin this summer with completion sometime in 2022 or 2023.

The Knights of Columbus has made a $50,000 donation for the new Providence Manor Long Term Care Home.  The service club has 800 members in the Kingston region and the donation yesterday was half of their commitment of giving $100,000 to the new long term care home.

It will be built in Providence Village on the Heathfield property owned by the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul. Work has already begun on the design stage for the project.
