Truck Hits Ice Fishing Shelters

Frontenac OPP have released surveillance photos of a person of interest after a pickup truck hit two people who were ice fishing on Sand Lake near Godfrey.

Police say a pickup truck was driven onto the ice around 1am on Sunday and struck two small ice fishing tents.  One man was knocked unconscious.  Police say he and the second man were treated and released from hospital in Kingston.

Police say they are looking for a light coloured pickup truck that fled the scene.

The photos show a man in the Kingston General Hospital Emergency department.  Police say his name may be Curtis and he had helped the men get to hospital.  He was picked up by a black pickup truck.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact the OPP or Crime Stoppers.

 

Budget Approval

Kingston City Council has given formal approval to the city’s budget for 2019.

The operating budget of just under $379 million and capital budget of $50 million were approved.

The increase in property taxes is being limited to 2.5 per cent this year.

 

Patterson – Mayors Task Force

Kingston City Council has approved a new Task Force on Housing and is asking staff to find money to back up its initiatives to create more affordable housing and fix roads and sidewalks.

Council was unanimous in its approval Mayor Bryan Paterson’s housing task force and approved an amendment last night that will see another tenant representative added to the task force.

Council also passed a motion asking for city staff to find $24.2 million in reserve funds or deferred costs to cover up to $18 million in funding for affordable housing and $6.2 million for road and sidewalk repair over the next four years.  It wants a report back from city staff for its April 16th meeting.

 

Environment – Sustainable Kingston

The city of Kingston will become a member of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy. Councillor Robert Kiley says it gives Kingston an international stage for leadership on climate.

 

City council also approved the renewal of funding for Sustainable Kingston during its meeting last night.  It will continue to operate for this year with $120,000 in funding from the city.

 

Assault – After Bar

A scary incident for a group of four people who went to a home in Kingston after meeting two men at a downtown bar.  Kingston Police say when the group got to the home around 1am yesterday.  The four people were attacked by the two men and violently assaulted.

Police were called and found one of the men in a nearby vehicle.  Police say both men got into a fight with them and now face multiple charges of assault, including assaulting police.

 

Domestic Assault

A 38 year old man is facing charges of assault, forcible confinement, uttering threats, and two counts of breach of recognizance after a woman was assaulted in her north end home on Monday night.

Police say the man forced his way into her home even though he was on conditions to stay away from her because of a previous incident.

 

Domestic – Fight over Food

A 37 year old Kingston man has been charged with assault and uttering threats in another incident of domestic violence.  Police say the man got into an argument over food with his girlfriend on Saturday afternoon.  He got into a fight with the woman, threatened to kill her and bit her on the arm.

 

Good Samaritan

Napanee OPP say a citizen who found an envelope containing more than $1,000 in a parking lot on Friday afternoon turned it in to police.

The envelope was found in the parking lot of a business off Centre Street in Napanee.

Police say they were able to find the rightful owner and the cash was returned.

 

Chamber – Outlook

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Kingston Chamber have released results of a survey that says confidence in Ontario’s economic outlook has improved.

30% of chamber members expressed confidence in Ontario’s outlook for this year…up seven points from last year. Karen Cross is the new Executive Director of the Kingston Chamber.

Cross says Kingston’s low jobless rate is a highlight – but a lack of confidence in the economy over a period of years has impacted the willingness of business to invest, take risks and adopt technological advancements.  Cross says they need the government to take action to address these challenges.
