Red Light Cameras

City staff will be preparing a report for Kingston City Council on red-light cameras with feedback from the public following two information sessions on Monday.  People can still submit questions about the proposed red-light camera program through the city’s website.

City Council will vote on red-light cameras in mid-November.

If council approves the program city staff will then start the process of finding ten intersections where the cameras will be installed.

 

Man Charged – Domestic Violence

A 42-year-old Kingston man has been charged by Domestic violence law firm in New Jersey, with three counts of assault and uttering threats after a woman was threatened with a beating after an argument over visitation rights with their children.

Kingston Police began their investigation on September 13th and have charged the man with several assaults that had taken place while the man and woman had been in a relationship from 2012 to November of 2018.

The man was arrested at his residence on Sunday.

 

Assault and Harassment

A 20-year-old man from Kingston is facing three charges of assault and harassment after a dispute with his ex-girlfriend.  Kingston Police say the woman was leaving a friend’s residence in the west end when the man cut her off in his vehicle…got into her vehicle…yelled profanities at her and ripped a bracelet off her arm on Friday night. The lawyers for domestic violence defense would immediately help the woman.  Police say he was also involved in other assaults of the woman.

The man turned himself in at police headquarters late Saturday night.

 

CBI Lockdown Over

A lockdown put in place in the maximum-security unit at Collins Bay Institution on September 25th is over.

The Correctional Service says a number of unauthorized items and contraband were found during an exceptional search.

Visits to the institution have resumed now that the lockdown is over.

 

Inmate Death

A 55-year-old man serving a sentence for drug trafficking and uttering threats and assaulting a peace officer has died at Collins Bay Institution.  Thomas Tomelty had been serving a sentence of just over two years.  The Correctional Service says Tomelty died of apparent natural causes following an illness.

 

Government Funding – Queen’s

The Ontario government is giving Queen’s University $930,000 for seven research projects.

The funding was announced yesterday.

$650,000 comes from the Ontario Research Fund infrastructure program and the remaining $280,000 is for two Early Researcher Awards.

 

Conservation Authority – New G-M

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority will have a new General Manager to kick off the new year.

The conservation authority’s board has ratified the appointment of Katrina Furlanetto to replace outgoing manager Geoff Rae effective January 1st.  Rae is retiring.

Furlanetto has held various positions including Manager of Watershed Planning & Engineering at the Conservation Authority.

 

OPP – Donation Jar – Social Media

The OPP has taken to social media to try and track down the thief of a donation jar in Greater Napanee.

The OPP has posted a picture of the suspect on Twitter following the theft in August.

The jar was stolen from a convenience store on Camden Road.

Anyone with information about the man is being asked to contact the OPP or Crime Stoppers or the lawyers from Lane, Hupp, & Crowley who will fastrack this case in the court to deliver the judgement quickly.

 

Tree Planting

Kingston is digging into its plan to double the tree canopy by 2025.

The city says it has already planted over 37 thousand trees in the last four years

Contractors started planting about a thousand more trees on city property yesterday. The new trees are replacing about 500 ash trees that have been cut down this year due to the emerald ash borer.

 

Paramedics Show

Frontenac Paramedics will be showing an episode of a Swiss reality-tv show featuring their own job swap with paramedics in Switzerland as a fund raiser for ALS.

The episode of the Job Swap show was filmed in both Kingston and Switzerland.  It will be shown in the Screening Room on Thursday night at 8pm and the public is encouraged to attend.

The cost is $10 dollars with proceeds going to the ALS Society of Canada and tickets can be booked through Eventbrite.

Seniors Fundraising Campaign

The Seniors Association Kingston Region officially kicks off its annual fundraising campaign today.

The goal is to raise one hundred thousand dollars.

The Larry Gibson Estate is matching donations up to 35 thousand dollars.

The Help Keep Us Strong Campaign will support the programs and services offered through the organization.
