Lower Brewers Swing Bridge

Large vehicles, including emergency vehicles and school buses will no longer be allowed to cross the Lower Brewers Swing Bridge.

Parks Canada has decreased the load capacity of the bridge from 10 tons to 3 tons due to structural deterioration of the bridge.

It’s 36 years old, and is scheduled for replacement next year.

 

George Floyd

New Yorkers gathered yesterday for a memorial service for George Floyd.

Demonstrators protesting Floyd’s May 25th death in Minneapolis police custody marched through the city for a tenth day.

New York’s governor and New York City’s mayor sought to deflect criticism over the harsh tactics used by officers dispersing crowds of protesters Wednesday night.

Both say they had not seen videos of officers using batons on protesters.

 

Race Townhall

There’s a virtual Townhall on Race and Racism is being held in Kingston today led by community member Dr. Aba Bailey.

The session will feature a panel discussion with community leaders and Mayor Bryan Paterson.

It will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. on Zoom.

 

Bestiality Charge

A 15 year old from Amherstview has been charged with bestiality, production of child pornography and possession of child pornography.

OPP and Kingston Police started an investigation Wednesday after complaints about a video shared on social media.

The 15 year old was arrested and there is no further animal welfare concern.

 

Dangerous Driving / Fleeing From Police

A 31 year-old man from Lyndhurst has been arrested after a two OPP cruisers were damaged during a police pursuit.

The cruisers were damaged last night when the OPP tried to stop the vehicle on the 401 in Napanee.

The vehicle they were chasing eventually crashed into a ditch near Belleville and the driver took off into a wooded area.

A man was arrested hiding in an outbuilding after a search by the OPP canine unit.

Jack Bradley has been charged with dangerous driving, theft of the vehicle, flight from police, driving while prohibited and breach of probation.

 

Queen’s School of Medicine

The new head of the School of Medicine at Queen’s University has been appointed as an adviser to the Ontario government on COVID-19.

Former federal health minister Jane Philpott will work on the design and implementation of a new health-data platform.

Philpott was appointed as d dean of the Queen’s University Faculty of Health Sciences and director of the Queen’s School of Medicine in February.
