November 4 – 25: National Novel Writing Month at KFPL

Since 2007, November has been designated National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for short. Aspiring writers worldwide are encouraged to track their progress online as they try to produce 50,000 words in a new manuscript between the first and last of the month. Focusing on quantity, rather than quality, the goal is to get writing, to write with a buddy or in a group, to combat writer’s block, and to produce a substantial first draft that can later be edited and rewritten to form a finished novel or the first part of a novel. By registering on the NaNoWriMo website writers can track their progress and connect with and encourage other writers, particularly in their own community. Pep talks from published writers also help, especially when they come from authors whose published works originated in NaNoWriMo, like Erin Morgenstern (The Night Circus), Rainbow Rowell (Fangirl), and Sara Gruen (Water for Elephants). Kingston Frontenac Public Library is again teaming up with Kingston NaNoWriMo to provide space for local writers participating in National Novel Writing Month.  At these two-hour sessions, adult and teen writers can meet with fellow writers to get some work done in a fun, supportive space with free WiFi and electrical outlets (and possibly a few snacks). These are drop-in sessions and no registration is required. This year’s sessions at KFPL will be held:
Monday, November 18, at Calvin Park at 2 p.m.
Monday, November 25, at Central at 2 p.m.

November 11 – December 16: Grownup Storytime: “Why should kids have all the fun?”

Grownup Storytime returns to the Sydenham branch of Kingston Frontenac Public Library for another six weeks. This time the sessions will be held by the fireplace each Monday from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. Each weekly session of this drop-in program is open to adults of all ages, and no registration is required. Come to as many sessions as you like! Listen to stories, essays, excerpts or articles read by Programming Assistant Margi McKay. Feel free to bring your lunch — or perhaps your knitting. If the group feels like staying to talk about what they’ve heard, there’ll be time for that as well.

November 21 – 24: The Sound of Music

The Kingston Meistersingers proudly present everyone’s favourite musical — Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved THE SOUND OF MUSIC, live at the Octave Theatre, 7:30pm evening performances and 2:00pm matinees. Tickets available online at http://www.meistersingers.ca or at the Grand Theatre box office.

November 18-28: Make A Will Sessions

November is Make a Will Month. Have you been putting off writing your will? Are you considering drawing up a Power of Attorney — for yourself or for a parent? Does the thought of estate planning make you anxious? Then plan to attend one of our free KFPL Live talks offered with the help of the Ontario Bar Association. Local estate lawyers will explain why advance planning is so advisable and what common pitfalls to avoid when preparing your will. Power of attorney issues and the roles and responsibilities of executors and attorneys for property and personal care will be discussed. You will be able to ask questions, but no legal advice will be provided. We will be offering this talk three times. As all three presentations will be the same, please plan to attend just one. Each is free to adults.
– 7 p.m. on Monday, November 18, at the Isabel Turner branch
– 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, at the Sydenham branch
– 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 28 at the Calvin Park branch
Register online at calendar.kfpl.ca or by phone at (613) 549-8888. Questions? Contact: Anne Hall, 613-549-8888, ext.3528, ahall@kfpl.ca

November 19: Senior Writers Read Their Works

Kingston Frontenac Public Library is delighted to announce the latest Telling Your Story Showcase: Writings from the Seniors’ Writing Workshop. Readings will be given by participants from the five-week memoir-writing workshop led by award-winning author Jean Rae Baxter this October in Sharbot Lake. Having honed their stories during that process, these writers will now be sharing excerpts from the memoirs and family histories they created during the workshops. “It’s impressive what a wide range of stories these seniors have to share,” says Programming and Outreach Librarian Anne Hall. “Each one is a powerful episode from a life well lived. I think they’ll be of interest to everyone, not just to friends and family of the participants.” This event will take place in St Andrew’s Anglican Church hall, at 1028 Elizabeth Street in Sharbot Lake, at 2 p.m. Admission is free to all adults on a first-come, first-served basis — no registration is required.
