Budget Talk

Kingston Police will be keeping its request for an increase in its budget at 2.5% for next year…the goal the city has imposed on tax increase.

The police budget comes in at around $36 million for operating costs plus $1.6 million for capital expenditures.

The Kingston Police Services Board heard yesterday that Kingston growing population means more officers will be required in the future with budget increases projected at close to 5% for  2018 and 2019.

Tickets – Scalper Bots

The Ontario government is picking up on a private members bill from Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala to outlaw so called…”scalper bots”.

Kiwala introduced her private members bill after people were shutout from getting tickets to The Tragically Hips summer concert tour.

Attorney General Yasir Naqvi announced yesterday the province will introduce legislation to make it illegal to use computer software to buy up large numbers of tickets online.

Frontenac County – Complaints

Anyone who has a formal complaint for Frontenac County will have to put it in writing.

Frontenac County council reluctantly approved the policy yesterday.

The county’s clerk says it will help determine how a complaint is handled by creating a record of the complaint.

Fire & Rescue Community Day

If you’ve ever wondered what goes on at that multi-million dollar fire training centre on Terry Fox Drive in Kingston – you have a chance to check it out Saturday and help raise money for the United Way campaign.

Kingston Fire and Rescue is hosting a community day.  Day passes are $10 per person or $20 for a family and activities include a chance to put out a car fire…rides in a fire truck…and a mini combat challenge for kids.

Giveaway Day

If you have stuff you don’t want but think someone else might enjoy it…Saturday is Giveaway Day.  The city says you can put items at the curb and is urging you to put a sign on the stuff saying FREE.  The City does not collect the items left over at the end of the day.  It says you should bring them inside and consider donating them to a local charity.

Food Matters

Food security for people who have a tough time making ends meet is the topic of a session on the importance of a secure food supply in the Kingston region.

The Community Foundations recent Vital Signs report says one out of eight families in the region struggles daily to put food on the table.

The Food Policy Council for Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington is hosting Food Matters – Connecting the Roots of Food Security tomorrow afternoon in Grace Hall at South Frontenac Community Services in Sydenham.

VegFest

The vegan lifestyle is will be in the spotlight during Kingston’s First Annual VegFest.

The celebration of vegan food takes place tomorrow at St. Lawrence College.

It features cooking demonstrations and a wide range of food vendors.
