Canoe Capsize – Fatal

There has been a terrible tragedy on Bob’s Lake.

Two young Kingston men lost their lives when the canoe they were in capsized Saturday night just off Mica Point.

They had been camping in the area and were with a three year old boy.  The boy was wearing a life jacket and was rescued by cottagers.

He was taken to hospital for observation and released to family members.

Frontenac OPP says 29 year old Justin Thomas Butts and 23 year old Daniel MacDonald died after the canoe capsized around 8:45 Saturday night.

Police, firefighters and cottagers searched for the two men – but had to stop because of darkness.

Their bodies were recovered yesterday afternoon.

Expanded Recycling

Kingston is looking at expanding services at the Kingston Area Recycling Centre on Lappan’s Lane by opening it to take material from other municipalities.

It currently process glass, plastic and paper from Kingston, Loyalist Township and South Frontenac.

A report for a city committee says there is enough interest from other municipalities in eastern Ontario to double the amount recycling done at the Recycling Centre.

The report recommends no action be taken until the province makes the final decision on making manufacturers pay the full cost of recycling.

When that happens…the report says the Kingston facility could double capacity by taking material from other municipalities and changing to a dual stream processing facility.

That would also eliminate the need to separate glass at the curb – something that may help expand the amount being collected.

Traffic Delays – Construction

A traffic note from the city of Kingston.
