Prof – No Longer at SLC

A nasty homophobic Facebook post has resulted in the end of the teaching career for a full time professor at the St. Lawrence College Kingston campus.

The college issued a two sentence news release about Rick Coupland’s employment yesterday.

It says…As a result of complaints about comments made on social media that were brought forward to the College this matter was investigated internally. Mr. Coupland is no longer an employee at St. Lawrence College.

St. Lawrence spokesperson Kelly Wiley says the college will not make any further comment.

Wagar – Additional Charge

A Stone Mills township man has been charged with fraud after an 81 year old woman failed to get interest on more than half a million dollars of investments.

The OPP says the woman invested the money with Kevin Wagar between 2010 and 2012.

Wagar has been charged with fraud over $5,000.

It’s the second charge of fraud against Wagar.

A news release from the OPP says Wagar met the 81 year old woman when worked for the Royal Bank.  Police say he also worked for Edward Jones before opening his own investment business…The Wagar Financial Group.

Secondary Suites

The city may put an end to secondary suites being built in the Westbrook Meadows subdivision and parts of Pittsburgh District.

A report from city staff recommends a moratorium on new secondary suites in both areas due to the

possibility of the sewer system being overloaded.

Business Development

A Kingston property management company and group of medical professionals have big plans for 14 acres of property along Highway 15 in Kingston’s east end.’

The Kingston Economic Development Corporation say Clermont Group will develop the site into what is being called a…”medical campus”.

Clermont Group says its vision for the 80,000 square foot development is to create a hub for specialized medical care.  It says the services could include specialist’s offices, after-hours clinics, labs, and a pharmacy.

Construction of the medical campus is scheduled to begin early next year.

New Business

A new business has opened in downtown Kingston.

Waterfront Gift and Apparel held its official opening yesterday.  It’s located on Ontario Street between Brock and Princess Street.  The space was being renovated for a nightclub when it was destroyed by fire last May.

The tourist focused store is operated by Kingston Thousand Islands Cruises.
