Water Rescue

One man was able to swim to shore but another had to be rescued when their canoe capsized in the Cataraqui River.

Kingston fire and Rescue says it got the 9-1-1 call around 6 last night.

Both men were wearing life jackets – one made it to shore near Newmarket Lane on his own and the other was rescued by two firefighters in an inflatable boat.

He was taken to hospital by paramedics and later released.

The Coast Guard also responded but its services weren’t needed.

High Rise Demonstration

People opposed to high rise development at the former Empire Theatre location in downtown Kingston will stage an information picket today.

Vision for Kingston says it will have members demonstrating in front of the former theatre from 1pm to 4pm.

Group spokesperson Kip Pegley says it doesn’t want a high rise looming over the historic downtown.  The group is urging people to speak out against the development at this Thursday’s planning committee meeting.

Kingston Pride

A group of about five hundred people gathered in Springer Market Square last night to attend a vigil for the people killed in the Orlando nightclub shooting.

The vigil was organized by Kingston Pride.

It says the tragedy in Orlando will not stop activities this weekend.  It will raise the Pride Flag in Confederation Park on Saturday and will have activities in City Park Saturday and Sunday.  The Kingston Pride Parade will take place starting at noon on Saturday.

E-bike – Impaired

A 34 year old Kingston man spent the night in a police cell after being arrested for drunk driving….on an e-bike….and police say he blew three times over the legal limit.

Police say they were called about an e-bike weaving in and out of traffic in the area of Bath Road and Gardiners Road around 7:15 last night.

Police found the bike and driver on Queen Mary Road near Bath Road.

The e-bike has been impounded for a week and the man has a date in court for later this month.

Kingston – 175th Anniversary 1st Parliament

Kingston will be celebrating its 175th anniversary as the first capital of Canada tomorrow.

Today…the original stained glass window from the First Parliament in Kingston will be unveiled at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre.  The Canadian Museum of History is lending the window to Kingston and it will be on display at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre this summer.

Tragically Hip – Tickets

Fans of The Tragically Hip have another chance to get tickets for their sold out shows.

The band issued a message yesterday saying a block of tickets for each show will go on sale at 10 this morning.

Each customer will only be allowed to purchase two tickets.

The Hip says the new tickets have been made available after a change in the stage design.

Construction

The city has terminated its construction deal with the company that was supposed to be doing restoration work on the Front Road Bridge.  It has advised Lischer Construction it will no longer be doing the work.  The city says it will restore the bridge to four lanes of traffic while it works on finding a new contractor to complete the bridge work.

Coco Paving is scheduled to complete the work on restoring the bridge to four lanes on Friday.
