United Way

 

The United Way campaign in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington has gone over the top.

The campaign has raised $3,702,100….That a quarter of a million dollars more than the goal of $3,451,000.  The announcement was made at the Touchdown Breakfast at the Ambassador Hotel and Conference Centre.

 

North King’s Town

 

The city is promising to do a better job listening to feedback from the public when it comes to the future of North King’s Town…the Inner Harbour and old industrial area in Kingston’s north end.

Policy planning manager Greg Newman says many people were unhappy with a draft report presented at a recent open house.  He’s assuring them their feedback will be better reflected in the next draft report.  A summary of the feedback to the original draft report has been posted on the city’s website.

 

Major Investment Teaser

 

How’s this for a teaser.

The Kingston Economic Development Corporation and the City will be hosting a significant Business Investment Announcement tomorrow afternoon.  No details are being released on what the announcement is about.

 

 

Family Doctors Association

 

The head of the Queen’s Department of Family Medicine has been appointed President of the Ontario College of Family Physicians.   Dr. Glenn Brown will champion the role family physicians play in the delivery of primary care in Ontario.  Brown has 33 years of experience in family medicine.  He has also been Chief of Staff and Director of Emergency Medicine at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital in Napanee.

 

Downie – Indigenous Partnership

 

Gord Downie is teaming with a prominent aboriginal leader to encourage Canadian companies to promote dialogue and reconciliation with First Nations people.  The Tragically Hip frontman and Assembly of First Nations regional Chief Morley Googoo announced the project in Halifax on Tuesday.  The Legacy Room initiative is intended to encourage bars, restaurants and companies to designate special rooms where aboriginal issues can be discussed.  One Halifax restaurant has already signed up, and Googoo hopes to have 600 more businesses on board within the next six months.

 

Domestic Assault – Intervention

 

Kingston Police say an off-duty military police officer intervened when he say a man hit his wife in public at the Kingston Centre.

Police say the couple had an infant with them and got into an argument outside one of the stores.  The off duty MP saw the man grab the woman’s wrist and hit her in the face.  He contacted police and held the couple until police arrived.  A 37-year-old Kingston man faces a charge of domestic assault.

 

Fire – Seniors Home – Seeley’s Bay

 

Nobody was injured when fire broke out at the Seeley’s Bay Retirement Home.

The 25 residents and staff members were evacuated from the home at around 6:30 yesterday morning. The fire was contained in a basement electrical room…but there was significant smoke damage.
