Council – New Tims

 

A new Tim Hortons drive-thru is coming to the Kingston Centre.

Kingston city council has approved the new Tim Hortons for the corner of Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard and Princess Street.  It will be built in the space occupied by the Loblaws Garden Centre in the spring and summer.

Council voted 7-4 in favour of the zoning change to permit the new drive-thru.

There had been concerns about noise for the nearby Bowling Green Apartments.

 

Ice Conditions

 

Stay off the ice – the warning is simple but people still ignore it.

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority is advising residents to stay clear of any ice-covered surfaces, open waterways, ponds, lakes and ditches.

It says the dangers of drowning and hypothermia are heightened because of the unpredictability of water flows, ice thickness and near-freezing temperatures.

The Conservation Authority says it does not expect any widespread flooding during the mild weather…but says there could be some flooding in low lying areas.

 

Man Charged – Assault

 

A 26-year-old Kingston man is facing charges of assaulting two family members on Family Day and trying to fight a police officer.

Kingston Police say it happened when the man came home and smashed a coffee pot in the kitchen.

Police say the victims…a man and woman…fled to a neighbour’s home to call police.

The 26 year old has been charged with two counts of assault, mischief, assault with intent to resist arrest and two counts of breach of probation.

 

Lockdown Over

 

The lockdown at the medium security unit of Collins Bay Institution put in place on February 14th has ended.  The Correctional Service says an exceptional search turned up several unauthorized items and two handmade weapons.

A news release says the institution has resumed its normal operations and visits have resumed.

 

Marijuana Grow – Picton

 

Police say a man has been charged after they received a complaint about a possible firearm and marijuana being grown in a home in Picton.

O-P-P say they searched the home on Monday and seized some marijuana plants. They say the firearm turned out to be a pellet gun.   Douglas Tinney has been charged with producing marijuana and is to appear in Picton court on March 29th.

 

Napier Street – Public Meeting

 

The city is holding a public consultation session tonight on closing Napier Street, between Brock and Mack Streets.  That section of Napier runs between Churchill Park and the former Catholic School property at 671 Brock Street.  A portion of the school property will become parkland and the city wants to know if the street should become part of the park.

The public meeting is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Winston Churchill Public School.

 

Pink Shirt Day

 

It’s Pink Shirt Day…a day to promote an end to bullying.  The Boys and Girls Club of Kingston and Area has been selling pink t-shirts with the message…Be Kind…as part of its promotion for Pink Shirt Day.

 

Community Foundation Grants

 

The Community Foundation for Kingston and Area will be handing out $80,000 in grants today.

Local charities will receive the funding for special projects to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation.

The grant ceremony takes place starting at 4:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall at Kingston City Hall.
