Standoff Ends

 

A 52 year old man is dead and the provinces Special Investigations Unit has taken over the investigation following a Kingston Police standoff with the man in a home on Compton Street.

The standoff ended with police breaking in the front door of the home around 10:30 last night.

There has been no word on how the man died.  The Special Investigations Unit will determine what role police played in the death.

The incident started at around 3 p.m. yesterday when a woman was assaulted on Beverley Street near Queen’s University.  She was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Kingston Police Emergency Response Team and officers surrounded a home at 100 Compton Street and said a man with a gun was wanted on criminal charges.  It ended with police finding the body of the man inside the home.

 

Attempted Murder

 

Kingston Police say a man charged with attempted murder was found sitting on the couch of an apartment where the victim had been injured.

The 46 year old Kingston man was arrested without incident.

Police and paramedics were called to the apartment on First Avenue around 2:15 yesterday morning after a man suffered a serious head injury.

Police say the reason for the assault is unclear.

 

Green Bin

 

The city is advising people it will no longer pick up green bins filled with only yard waste.

The change in the city’s waste bylaw becomes effective on May 1st and means the green bin must be used for food waste.  The city says it’s okay to continue to put a small amount of yard waste in the bin but collectors must see food waste to collect it.

 

The Hip – Cancer

 

The Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Cancer Trials Group and Queen’s University will honour hometown heroes…The Tragically Hip today.

The Canadian Cancer Society has received $400,000 in donations to conduct clinical trials research to improve treatment for brain cancer.

The money came from an outpouring of support for The Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie after he was diagnosed with an aggressive type of brain cancer.

The Hip will be honoured with the presentation of a plaque during a ceremony at 10 this morning.

 

Downtown Kingston – Award

 

The Managing Director of the Downtown Kingston Business Improvement Area has been honoured by the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association.

Doug Ritchie is the winner of the organizations Alex Ling Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ritchie was honoured for his dedication to Downtown Kingston at the association’s annual conference in Toronto.

Ritchie has led the organization in Kingston since it started in 1983.

 

St. Lawrence College Week

 

St. Lawrence College has launched the 50 Acts Challenge, part of a week-long celebration of the college’s 50th anniversary. The challenge involves a variety of charitable work including a toy drive for a women’s shelter, a shoreline cleanup and the Young Women Innovators Conference.

The week will end with the annual Spring Open House on Saturday.

The college says other celebrations of the 50th anniversary will continue throughout the rest of this year.
