Shafia Appeal

One of the members of the Shafia family convicted in the Kingston Mills honour killing murder case will find out today if his appeal will be heard.

Hamed Shafia has argued new evidence shows he was a youth at the time.

The Supreme Court will announce today if it will allow his appeal to proceed.

Shafia and his parents were found guilty in January 2012 of four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his teenage sisters and his father’s first wife.  The four bodies were found in a car at the bottom of the Rideau Canal at Kingston Mills.

Arrest – Domestic Abuse

A 30 year old Kingston man is facing charges in connection with a domestic abuse case after being arrested by Kingston Police at the Toronto airport.

Police say they started their investigation in February.

The man faces two charges of assault…one charge of harassment, one of uttering a death threat and a charge of mischief.

Marijuana Legislation

The federal government is holding a noon-hour news conference today to announce its long-awaited marijuana legislation today.

Measures in the legislation are expected to include tough penalties for selling to minors and impaired driving…limits for legal possession, age restrictions and rules for advertising marketing marijuana.

Marijuana at the Gym

A strong smell of marijuana coming from a locker at a fitness centre in Kingston has resulted in a 27 year old man being charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and breach of probation.

Police say staff at the gym noticed the smell on Monday and opened the locker to find numerous baggies filled with pot.  They called police and the marijuana was seized.

The man turned himself in to police on Tuesday.

Tick Time

Health officials are warning you about Lyme disease and say black legged ticks are starting to come out at this time of year.

KFL&A Public Health says it recorded 60 confirmed cases of Lyme disease and one possible case last year.

Health unit staff collect ticks in the spring and fall and have found that about 40% of ticks carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

The health unit says anyone finding a tick should remove it, report it to the health unit and see a doctor if they’re worried about being infected.

Holiday

A holiday weekend is coming up and most retails outlets in Kingston will be closed tomorrow.

Kingston Transit will not be operating on Good Friday…but it will run on its regular schedule on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Easter Monday is a holiday from some people…including city staff.  That means no garbage or recycling collection on Friday or Monday.  Friday collection takes place on Saturday and collection next week moves a day ahead of your regularly scheduled day.

Kingston Rowing Club – Armitage

The Kingston Rowing Club is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Coach John Armitage has been there since the beginning and has coached high school, university and Olympic rowers.

The club is offering a new program for its anniversary year aimed at 10 to 14 year olds called Madskulls Summer Camp.

Armitage says he’s proud of his involvement in the sport in Kingston for the past 40 years.
