Next Level – Investigation Update

The police investigation into a Kingston investment firm is moving into the next stage and police are now asking for information from people who had dealings with the company.

Kingston Police started the investigation into Next Level Investments earlier this year.  Five people were charged with fraud related offences.  The investigation is continuing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

Anyone who had dealings with Next Level is being asked to fill out an online form.

Collins Bay Lockdown

Inmates have been locked in their cells and an exceptional search is underway after a fight involving several prisoners in the maximum security unit at Collins Bay Institution.

A news release from the Correctional Service says the fight took place Monday night and the injured inmates were transferred to hospital for treatment.  The news release says the assailants have been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken.

No staff or other inmates were injured and the Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is investigating.

Third Crossing

The Third Crossing will be front and centre at a meeting at Kingston City Hall tonight.

The Downtown Kingston board has arranged for the city’s Director of Engineering to make a presentation on the final business plan for the bridge over the Cataraqui River.

The session has been organized for members of Downtown Kingston, The Chamber of Commerce and other business associations.

The estimated cost of the Third Crossing has ballooned to 180 million dollars.

City Council is expected to vote on whether to approve the project at a special meeting in June.

Breakout Project

Kingston is hosting an event called The Breakout Project starting today.

The promoters have billed it as the country’s biggest social innovation event.

The Breakout Project takes place at Fort Henry and over the course of 48 hours…teams working around the clock will develop year-long projects to improve the community and planet.

Each team has to raise human and financial capital to make the project become reality.

Sam Roberts Band will close out The Breakout Project with a free concert Friday night in Springer Market Square.  The local band Kasador will open the show.

PEC Top Cop

There’s a new top cop in Prince Edward County.

OPP detachment commander Barry Freeburn has retired after 33 years of policing.

Sergeant John Hatch has been promoted to Staff Sergeant and is taking over command of the Prince Edward County detachment of the OPP.

Policing runs in the family…his father and grandfather were both members of the OPP and he’s no stranger to the county…for the past three years he has worked as a front line supervisor in Prince Edward County and hopes to retire there.

History File

From Tony’s today in history file…land ho 483 years ago…and the capital moves from the Limestone City 173 years ago.

It was on this day…May 10th…1534 that Jacque Cartier arrived at Cape Bonavista, Newfoundland on his first voyage to Canada.

On this day in 1844…the capital of Canada was moved from Kingston to Montreal where it remained for five years.
