Northstar Fire – Update

The owner of the Northstar gas station is out of business and has lost his home following a fire Sunday night.  Kingston Fire and Rescue believes the fire was started by an overloaded electrical circuit.

Muazzam Abdul Aziz credits the smoke alarm with alerting him to the fire and saving his life.

The family’s home occupies the rear of the building that suffered extensive fire and smoke damage.

Fire Marshall – Joseph Street

An investigator from the Ontario Fire Marshalls Office is working on trying to determine the cause of a fire at a home on Joseph Street in Kingston.  The fire last Thursday night caused about $100,000 damage.

Officials won’t say if they believe the fire is suspicious.

Mayor – Pride

Kingston’s Mayor says the city and city council steadfastly support the LGBTQ community and look forward to working together in the future.

Mayor Bryan Paterson was criticized over his absence from the Pride Parade in Kingston on Saturday.

But Paterson says he was attending a family gathering in Newmarket to mark the memory of his father, who died last June.

Paterson issued a public letter yesterday saying our vision is to embrace and promote diversity in our community, and to stand against hatred, violence and discrimination based on race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

Peter Stroud – Report

You can expect to hear another apology from Kingston city councillor Peter Stroud.

Stroud has been found guilty of violating city council’s code of conduct.

City council will get the report from Integrity commissioner Janet Leiper tonight.

Leiper found Stroud violated the code of conduct when he made comments about landlords and land owners in a news story about large additions to homes in his district.  He was interviewed in front of a home and the homeowner complained to the city.

The report says Stroud violated two sections of the code of conduct requiring councillors to treat members of the public with dignity and to not make false or misleading statements.

The Integrity Commissioner has recommended Stroud make a public apology.
