Damage – Storms

Thunderstorms that rolled across southern Ontario did hit some places around Kingston yesterday afternoon.

High winds and rain battered Odessa and some areas in South Frontenac.

The Loyalist Township Fire Department reported numerous trees down in Odessa and pictures posted on social media show trees that came down during the late afternoon thunderstorms that rolled past Kingston.

City Council – Threat

Kingston city councillor Kevin George has confirmed he was the one who received a death threat by email.

George received the threatening e-mail message after voting in favour of the Third Crossing…the bridge over the Cataraqui River.

George says he made the decision not to comment on the threat for the sake of his family.

A 38 year old man has been charged with uttering threats to cause death by email.

Pasta Shelf – Car – Window

Nobody was injured when a vehicle crashed through the front window of the Pasta Shelf at Bath Road and McEwen Drive.

The vehicle wound up almost completely inside the business around yesterday afternoon.

The woman driving it was stuck inside and had to be removed by firefighters.

Kingston Police say she won’t be charged because the crash took place on private property.

Bike Sharing

Kingston is launching a pilot project to determine what kind of bike rental service it will provide in the future. The city is partnering with a Toronto based startup company called Dropbike.

Dropbike will have 100 rental bikes at various locations in the downtown and university area.

Customers have to download an app to find the closest bike to rent.  They’re supplied with the combination for the bike lock and then pay a dollar an hour for the bicycle.

Hospital Donation

McDougall Insurance and Financial has announced it’s making a $25,000 donations to the next phase of renewal for the Kingston Health Sciences Centre.

The upcoming project at Kingston General Hospital will include a new building to replace the outdated Empire, Dietary and Douglas Wings.

The community has to raise 10% of the construction cost and 100% of the cost for equipment.
