City Councillor – Apology

Kingston City Councillor Kevin George is in trouble at city council again.

George says he will apologize at the next meeting after using his two pointer fingers to make a gesture like a gun and going…pew, pew, pew.  He had been discussing the debate over a semi-detached home on Victoria Street after the proposal was rejected.  George had voted in favour.  Councillor Mayor Rita Holland has filed a formal complaint and George says he will apologize.

He was found to be in conflict of interest in 2015 over a housing development in his district and apologized to council over that incident.

Drug Dealer – Child in Car

Kingston Police say a drug dealer had his child with him while he was transporting heroin, crystal meth and cocaine in his car.  Police also found a can of mace and the government I-D of several people.

Police say an officer spotted a vehicle with the wrong plates on it on Wednesday afternoon…the driver tried to evade police but got stuck in the mud after jumping a curb in a Daley Street parking lot.

The charges against the 39 year old Kingston man include possession for the purpose of trafficking and failing to ensure the child was properly secured in the vehicle.

Drunk Driver

A 53 year old man from London, Ontario is facing an impaired driving charge in Kingston after being stopped going the wrong way on Centennial Drive.  Kingston Police say the man was kicked out of a local hotel at about 2:30 a.m. yesterday morning after yelling in the hallways and disturbing other guests.  Police say he left the hotel in a cab, but returned to the parking lot about a half an hour later and drove away in his vehicle.

Crash – High Speeds

Three drivers are facing charges from Kingston Police after separate incidents including a rollover crash on Jackson Mills Road near Burbrook Road.

Police have charged a 47 year old Kingston man with careless driving after he wound up trapped inside his vehicle when it rolled over and was pinned against a guard rail and tree.

 

A 24 year old Kingston man had his vehicle seized and faces a charge of stunt driving after his vehicle was clocked going at 111 lm/hr in a 50 zone on Bayridge Drive early last Sunday morning.

 

And a 33 year old man from Verona also faces a charge of stunt driving and has had his vehicle seized after being charged with going 117 km/h on Taylor Kidd Boulevard during the noon hour on Wednesday.

Open House – Skills Competition

St. Lawrence College is hosting the regional qualifying round for the Skills Ontario competition tomorrow.  High school students from Kingston and across eastern Ontario will be taking part in the event to qualify for the Ontario finals.

St. Lawrence is also hosting its annual Open House tomorrow.  People considering attending the college can check out programs and get tours tomorrow.  The Open House runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Feustel – Space Station

Queen’s University will be connecting with space today.

Astronaut and Queen’s grad Drew Feustel will be doing a live video broadcast and question and answer session from the International Space Station starting at 11 this morning.

You can connect with the free session at Grant Hall but Queen’s says space is limited and people should arrive early.

Wellness Centre

The new student wellness centre at Queen’s University’s will be called the Cote Sharp Wellness Centre.

Dennis Sharp and Helen Cote Sharp have donated $5 million dollars from the Cote Sharp Family Foundation for the facility.  It will be built next to the Athletic and Recreation Centre on the former property of the university’s arena and physical fitness centre.   Students will have access to a specialized team of medical and counselling staff when the centre opens this September.
