Shootings

R-C-M-P investigating the deadly weekend shooting and arson rampage in Nova Scotia say the death toll could still rise. At least 19 people are believed to have been killed so far, but police fear that five burned buildings across the 16 individual crime scenes could still hide additional bodies in the ruins.  As the shock begins to wear off and the grieving begins, many are asking why this happened…but at this time there are no answers and the 51-year-old suspect is dead.

COVID – Providence Manor

A resident at Providence Manor is Kingston’s latest case of the coronavirus.

The resident was placed in isolation on Friday. Providence Care received the positive COVID-19 test results yesterday.  It is the regions 57th case…52 people have recovered.

Providence Care says it is now trying to determine how the person who lived on Sydenham 4 became infected.

Any staff or residents that came in close contact with the confirmed case are being contacted and monitored for signs and symptoms over the next 14 days.  And…all staff and residents of Sydenham 4 are being tested for COVID-19.

Kingston – Loosening Guidelines

Kingston city council will be discussing loosening COVID-19 restrictions when it meets tonight.  A motion will be debated calling for local flexibility to provincial orders based on consultation with KFL&A Public

Health.  The motion from councillor Robert Kiley says this would properly address local needs and provide access to certain activities including community gardens, while continuing to implement physical distancing and other guidelines to ensure newly reopened community activities are places of safety and health for residents.

COVID – Ontario Plan

Premier Doug Ford says the province is working on a plan to gradually help Ontario resume a more normal routine. He says plans for resuming regular activities will be unveiled soon.  His comments came yesterday after the province released new projections showing Ontario has largely avoided the worst-case scenarios related to the COVID-19 outbreak.  The modeling shows community spread is peaking now, weeks ahead of when it was supposed to in May.

Emergency Room Visits

There has been a significant drop in the number of visits to the emergency department at Kingston General Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chief of Emergency Medicine, Dr. David Messenger, says he’s concerned the large decrease in patients could mean people are staying at home with potentially serious medical problems.

Messenger says there are strict infection control measures in place at the hospital and says the emergency department is a safe place to come if you need medical care.

COVID – Community Foundation

The Community Foundation for Kingston and Area has awarded three grants to help local charities respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sunshine Call Pilot is getting just over eight thousand dollars to phone isolated seniors every day to conduct a wellness check.

Lunch by George will use its grant of just over 15 thousand dollars to upgrade its kitchen stoves to help provide safe meals for those in need.

And… Bereaved Families Ontario – Kingston Region is receiving $7,900 to deliver grief-support services through text, chat, and video conferencing platforms.

Satellite Train

Some people in the Kingston area have seen an unusual sight in the night sky…a satellite train.

A group of Starlink satellites has streaked across the sky for the last two nights.  It was visible around 9:30 last night.  The satellites are owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX and were launched to provide broadband internet service.

The satellite train will be visible again this week.  More information is available online at: findstarlink.com
